2015 Rock Hill Middle School Falcon Project
The Rock Hill Middle School Falcon Project began in 2007 and was prompted through the interest of students following the reading of a passage on a practice Ohio Achievement test. The passage, which related the tale of two young peregrine falcons, led into a class discussion concerning the close proximity of a falcon nest located on our local Ironton-Russell Bridge.
The students and I headed to computers to find out what information we could concerning our local nest. Our search produced news articles concerning our falcons as well as names of local monitors of the nest. A few e-mails later and we were in touch with Chris Smith of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and local nest monitor who has acted as a class presenter and mentor throughout the project.
Additional searches led us to follow nest sites on The Cleveland Museum of Natural History's Falcon Cam, the Columbus, Ohio nest site live web cam, and the website and falcon class project of Lynne Harvey and her students in San Diego, California.
Please enjoy our class project site.
This year 50 eighth grade students in Mrs. Fraley's Language Arts classes at Rock Hill Middle School will follow a pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons located on the 12th floor of the Terminal Tower Building in Cleveland, Ohio. Additional nest observations will be made on the Columbus, Ohio nest site located on the 41st floor ledge at the Rhodes State Office Tower and the Ironton, Ohio site through information shared with the class by monitors of the nest site located on the Ironton-Russell Bridge.
The project is set up as an on-line, collaborative shell for the students to expand and share their knowledge of Peregrine Falcons; communicate with others about a central topic of interest; and further their developing technology literacy.
Students will work on the 2015 Falcon Project starting in January.
* Students will use the school computer lab/smart board to observe falcons on live webcams, and use the information to graph and chart various data, and make predictions.
* Students will be assigned a topic related to raptors and will complete a research report and present their findings to the class.
* Students will post updates on the Ironton-Russell Bridge falcons and their project on their school thread on the Cleveland's Museum of Natural History Falcon Cam website forum. They will also participate on a project blog linked to this site.
* Students will enjoy a visit to the class by Chris Smith of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources who will give a presentation on falcons.
* Students will be given the honor of naming the 2015 falcon chicks born on the Ironton-Russell Bridge and a selected group of students will attend and assist in the banding.
