Grade Career Week Activities
September 16th – September 20th
Monday
(16th)
Students will complete Career Cluster Interest Inventory in order to match their interests with specific careers. This will be completed during their Enrichment period.
Tuesday
(17th)
Various speakers working in a broad range of careers will visit the school and speak to students. This will be held during the students Enrichment period and their 3rd
Block.
Wednesday
(18th)
Students will visit WSAZ studio in Huntington, WV and tour the station. Students will see the behind the scenes activities and jobs that are held. They will meet and discuss the career of meteorologist Brandon Butcher
newscaster Rob Johnson and view the live broadcast of the noon news program.
Another group of students will visit WKEE Radio station in Huntington, WV. They will tour the studio and behind the scenes jobs. They will meet morning DJ Dave Roberts and participate in a question and answer session.
Thursday
(19th)
Students will participate in the Marathon Refinery Career Fair to familiarize students with the variety of jobs held at the refinery. Students will be exposed to many different career opportunities from accounting to inspection to emergency response.
Friday
(20th)
Students will participate in follow-up discussions in all
classes and complete a reflection writing activity of their week during Enrichment.

Former student K.C. Christian visited in the spring of 2011 and motivated students to do well on OAA testing, and it worked!!!! Eighth grade students scored very well with an 81 percent passage rate!!! Great job!
K.C. Christian with a few of his achievements earned while at The Ohio State University...his Bachelor's Degree and four Big Ten rings. K.C. earned his Master's Degree in Education in June of 2011. He is currently employed by the Louisville, Kentucky school system as a sixth grade science teacher.
Language Arts Classes
Students will work on the 2013 Falcon Project starting in March
* During this project students will read novels from the "My Side of the Mountain" trilogy by Jean Craighead George, and many informative reading materials.
* Students will visit the school computer lab to observe falcons on live webcams, and use the information to graph and chart various data and make predictions.
* Students will be assigned a topic related to raptors and will complete a research report and present their findings to the class.
* Students will post updates on the Ironton-Russell Bridge falcons and their project on their school thread on the Cleveland's Museum of Natural History Falcon Cam website forum. They will also participate on a project blog linked to this site.
* Students will enjoy a visit to the class by Chris Smith of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources who will give a presentation on falcons.
* Students will be given the honor of naming the 2013 falcon chicks born on the Ironton-Russell Bridge and a selected group of students will attend and assist in the banding.

Other novels that students will read.
Students will read the novel "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen. "Hatchet" is a story of a thirteen-year-old boy fighting for survival in the northern Canadian wilderness. They will also independently read "Brian's Winter", the sequel to "Hatchet" and take the Accelerated Reader quizzes for that novel.

Students from last year loved the novel "The Hunger Games" by author Suzanne Collins. We will be reading it again this year and attending the movie when it opens in March of 2012.
Our principal.
The students talked our principal into reading the novel series and he could often be found sneaking in a few pages of reading with the book stashed in his desk drawer.
